In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was to care for his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the wind through the lone tree on the mountaintop were his main associates. Day in day, guarding his wards instilled in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. On one such day from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plan.
Tales of wild beasts preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a read more joke on the villagers.
One morning he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
